SALT LAKE CITY — "The Forgotten Carols" started 22 years ago. Now, it's evolved into a Christmas tradition for thousands across the western U.S. This year the event gets back to its roots with Michael, Lynne and Jeff McLean taking the stage.
"The Forgotten Carols" started as a one-man show on a church stage in Heber. Michael McLean played all the parts; his wife would help sing the songs. After several years, their son Jeff joined in to help bring "The Forgotten Carols" to life.
"Jeff's voice is just a spectacular singing voice," Michael said.
"I can't be in the same place while Jeff is singing," Lynne said. "I have to go in the back room. Because when he starts singing, I start crying."
Jeff McLean's talents took him around the world and on several national tours of popular Broadway musicals.
"It's very, very cool to be asked back and to be able to be with mom and dad, and on the road again," Jeff said.
The family experience of the story and being together is something the McLean's never tire of.
"Dad just writes songs that are amazing and from your soul," Jeff said.
"Obviously when you get to do it with your family, it's fun, and fresh, and terrific, Michaels said.
"These are the joyous moments when we can all be together," Lynne added.
It's easy to wonder if 22 years performing together ever gets old.
"The honest answer is that I don't get tired of it," Michael said. "I get tired — because I'm old now — but that's the great thing about writing a part about a guy who's 2,000 years old, because I will never be too old to do it."
