KEARNS — Police reported that a 17-year-old boy staged a home invasion and is in stable condition at the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The boy called 911 around 7:40 p.m. reporting that he was home alone and had discovered someone with a gun in his home at 5292 S. Leprechaun Lane (5280 West), Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said. The teenager reported that the gun was pointed at him when the call was disconnected.

Soon after, the victim called back to report that he had exchanged gunfire with the man and had been shot. He was transported to an area hospital in fair condition, Hoyal said.

The victim left the scene before he could give an extensive interview, but he told police there were two men involved in the robbery, and one was armed. Police searched the area with K-9 units but found no one.

When police started processing the scene, they found the evidence was not consistent with the boy's story, Hoyal said.

Police interviewed the boy at the hospital and he admitted that he had staged the robbery and his gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

A motive has not been reported, but police are reviewing the case for possible charges for filing a false police report, Hoyal said.
