FARMINGTON — Two kittens that were rescued after surviving being tossed from a moving vehicle on I-15 have died.
Although their deaths were not directly attributed to the injuries sustained from being tossed out of a pickup truck traveling freeway speed last month, Davis County Animal Shelter assistant director Tracy Roddom said the kittens were in trauma when they arrived at the shelter, which compromised their immune system.
The kittens died from feline distemper, she said, a contagious and life-threatening viral disease. The kittens were being cared for at a local animal rescue at the time of their deaths.
On Oct. 30, a woman driving on I-15 near Kaysville watched as two people in a maroon F-150 about six car lengths ahead of her tossed a mother cat and four kittens out of the moving vehicle. The cat and two kittens were killed, but an orange and black kitten survived. The woman picked up the kittens off the shoulder of the road and took them to the shelter.
The Humane Society is offering a $7,500 reward for information leading to the arrests of the people who tossed the felines on the road. Anyone with information on the vehicle or the suspects can call the shelter at 801-444-2200.
