Draper Officer shot and killed

Draper Police Sgt. Derek Johnson, 32, was pulled from his mangled police vehicle on Fort street shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday with gunshot wounds that proved fatal. He was pronounced dead shortly after being flown to Intermountain Medical Center, leaving a wife, child, other family members and a grief-stricken law enforcement community in search of comfort and answers.

Johnson never left his vehicle nor did he return fire.

Teen dies after fall in Adam's Canyon

A 15-year-old has died one day after falling while hiking in Adam's Canyon, the Davis County Sheriff's Office confirmed Sunday. The boy, whose identity was not released by police, was hiking with a group of five Saturday evening when he reportedly slipped and fell between 50 and 70 feet. He was taken to the hospital, where he succombed to his injuries.

Young girl's premonition saves family from deadly fire

A young girl from California saved her family's life from a house fire early Sunday morning after she had a bad feeling that something would happen. 11-year-old Marie Elias is being hailed a hero for saving all 20 people sleeping in the three-bedroom house. She says she stayed awake because she loves her family so much and didn't want to see anything bad happen to her brothers and sisters.

Elias says her premonition that something would happen started Saturday night. At 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Elias' premonition came true as a fire broke out in the house. Marie alerted her family to the fire, and everyone was able to escape without injury. Investigators never found a smoke detector in the rubble.

Mountain coaster opens in Little Cottonwood Canyon

Snowbird Resort celebrated its grand opening of the new mountain coaster Saturday, on which riders take a twisting and turning ride through the trees, using a simple control to slow down or speed up their ride.

Once belted into the two-person cart, riders are pulled 160 feet up a ramp before gravity takes over and carries the cart down the mountain. A second passenger adds more weight, making the coaster glide faster over the track. Depending on how much braking the rider uses, the ride can last anywhere from 4 to 5 minutes.

Business deal turns into armed home robbery, police say

According to police, a 27-year-old man invited a 20-year-old woman to his home to discuss a business deal concerning an auto club early Saturday morning. Upon her 1 a.m. arrival, four males followed her inside. Three of the males held the victim at gunpoint while they used zip ties to restrain him and take him to the basement, where they also restrained the man's sister and her boyfriend.

While in the basement, they attempted to coax a 4-year-old child to leave the home with them, Hoyal said. The child refused to do so. As people in the home began to stir, the five people fled to a car outside, taking electronics and cash with them.

Police arrested the five, as well as the driver of the vehicle.

28-year-old man shot, killed on Salt Lake City street

Police arrested two men Saturday in connection with the shooting death of a man in Salt Lake that morning.

Nicholas James Valdez, 27, was arrested on suspicion of homicide in the death of 28-year-old David Gonzalez, according to Salt Lake police. Donald Valdez, 31, was booked on suspicion of obstruction of justice.

Around 7 a.m., a resident in the area of 970 S. 300 West heard three gunshots fired and a female scream. When police officers arrived following a 911 call and hang-up, they found a body laying on the west sidewalk of 300 West and a number of people running in different directions.

Police said the man was shot in the forehead.
