ROOSEVELT — Funeral services are pending for a Vernal woman who died from injuries suffered in a Wyoming motorcycle crash that also injured her husband.

On Aug. 6, Ronald Wayne Hansen and his wife, Amy Bowen Hansen, were riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle north on Highway 191 about 39 miles north of Pinedale, according to Wyoming Highway Patrol Sgt. Stephen Townsend.

The Hansens were behind two pickup trucks that had just finished spraying for weeds on the side of the road. Wayne Hansen attempted to pass both trucks after they slowed down and the truck immediately in front of him pulled onto the right shoulder, Townsend said.

The driver of the lead truck, however, turned left across the southbound lane and Hansen crashed into it, the sergeant said.

Wyoming motorcycle laws
  • Helmets required by law under age 18
  • All motorcycles are entitled to full use of a lane and no motor vehicle shall be driven in such a manner as to deprive any motorcycle of the full use of a lane. Two (2) motorcycles may be driven abreast in the same lane by consent of both motorcycle drivers.

The Hansens were thrown from their bike. Neither was wearing a helmet. She was taken by medical helicopter to Eastern Idaho Medical Center in Idaho Falls. He was taken by ambulance to St. John Hospital in Jackson, Wyo., and later transferred to Eastern Idaho Medical Center.

Amy Hansen, 38, died Aug. 8. Her organs were donated to seven people, saving their lives, her family said.

Wayne Hansen, who remains hospitalized, told family members the two trucks were both on the right shoulder of the road — their right turn signals flashing — when he decided to pass, and that the lead truck made an unexpected U-turn in front of him.

Hansen, 47, was cited, however, for unsafe passing, Townsend said.
