WEST VALLEY — A 16-year-old boy is in extremely critical condition after falling off an ATV onto concrete.

Around 4 p.m. Saturday, a Utah Department of Transportation maintenance worker and his teenaged son were test-driving a personal ATV in the parking lot of a UDOT facility at 5791 W. 2100 South. As the father turned the vehicle, the teen slumped over and fell onto the concrete, UDOT spokesperson John Gleason said.

"Nothing like this has ever happened as long as anyone here can ever remember," he said.

Though initial information was limited, Gleason said it was believed the teen injured his head on the concrete. No information was available on whether or not the teen had a pre-existing medical condition, or what exactly caused him to fall out of the vehicle, which has a top speed of 10 mph, he said.

The teen was taken to the University of Utah hospital in extremely critical condition.

"It sounds like a terrible, tragic accident," Gleason said. "We want to extend our heartfelt, sincerest condolences, and our thought and prayers to the family at this time."

The company will review its policies during the investigation into the incident. Gleason called the incident "tragic," for the worker and for those who were stationed at the shed.
