DRAPER — Draper police have arrested a man they suspect is involved in a rash of mailbox thefts.
Kevin Russell Humphreys, 32, was booked after police found a credit card, social security card and checkbook belonging to another person in his possession on Thursday.
One woman, who doesn't want to be identified because of fears for her family's safety, said in the past few weeks someone stole her credit card out of her mailbox -- and managed to call the credit card company, change the pass codes and other personal information.
"When they ran up these charges on our credit card, they were doing background checks," she said. "So I'm very nervous about what kind of information they're digging for on us, or other people who are also victims."
Another Draper resident said someone withdrew thousands of dollars from his bank account, using checks stolen from his mailbox last week.
"For this reason now, in various places in my home and on my body when I'm home I have a loaded gun," he said. "And it doesn't make you feel comfortable."
Two Draper residents who are missing a bank statement and credit card said despite the arrest they still fear for their safety because the thieves have taken so much information and because of a possibility that there may be more out there.
Draper police are working with other agencies dealing with similar investigations, including the U.S. Postal Service. Officials warn residents to retrieve their mail as quickly as possible after it is delivered and to take outgoing mail to the post office.
Police are also asking residents who see anyone loitering in their neighborhood to report it and to take down a description of the person, as well as information about the vehicle's make, model, color and license plate number.
