BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A biker was flown off the mountain from Desolation Lake Trail Sunday after he lost control of his mountain bike, crashed and injured his leg.

Unified police detective Jared Richardson said the first call officers received was from a friend who reported Charles Lyons, 35, had a compound fracture. When medical crews were able to make contact, they determined it wasn't a compound fracture but the injury did prevent him from walking.

Lyons was taken by Life Flight helicopter off the mountain to Cardiff Fork, where Unified firefighters were able to take him to Intermountain Medical Center. He said Lyons had been on that trail several times before, but lost control as he went around a corner, the detective said.

It took the pilots a little longer to get to Lyons because there were several groups on the ridge line waving to the helicopter and they were confused which group had the victim. Richardson reminded hikers and bikers not to draw attention to themselves if they are not in trouble.
