WEST JORDAN — A West Jordan woman accused of killing her daughter before attempting to kill herself will be in court Wednesday morning.

Mary Hansen, 53, faces a sentencing hearing. Attorneys have said that the woman will likely be sentenced to consecutive prison terms of one to 15 years and three to 15 years for the 2012 incident.

Hansen pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the charge of manslaughter and felony discharge of a firearm.

According to reports, when police responded to Hansen's home in West Jordan, she admitted to an officer that she'd shot her 18-year-old daughter. Hansen then shot herself in the head, drove to a neighbor's home, honked her car's horn and asked them to call 911.

Police found her bleeding inside her vehicle when they arrived.

Hansen claimed she and her daughter, Virginia, had a suicide pact, and that both of them "wanted to die." Charges state the woman told others at the hospital that she and her daughter suffered from a mental illness.

Virginia Hansen's body was located in a bedroom of the home on Bard Lane. A revolver was located nearby.

According to court records, Hansen underwent some examinations prior to Wednesday's sentencing. The records don't specify just what those examinations were.
