SALT LAKE CITY — Tens of thousands of Utah children will now have an easier time doing their summer reading.
KSL viewers and Papa Murphy's patrons helped Read Today fill a bus of books for Utah students as part of the "Drop 5 for the Book Drive" event.
Pizza store owners, used to big owners of cheese and toppings, were instead hauling in books donated by customers this weekend.
Throughout June, Papa Murphy's patrons could donate five books they no longer needed, and in exchange, Papa Murphy's would give them a mini pizza. About 6,000 pizza lovers gave books for the meal.
The result could be found in a bus: 30,000 kids would have summer reading material.
The bus will deliver these books to United Way and elementary school programs that need them to help students avoid losing ground over the summer.
"Reading is the foundation for success. You can't do much in the world if you can't read," said Utah Papa Murphy's Co-op President Greg Dumas. "This is a summer of reading and now there are going to be lots of good books for kids to read."
