SALT LAKE CITY — Four people were arrested Wednesday after police say they fled from officers in an incident that may have started as a shooting.
Just before 3 p.m., a woman stopped at the intersection of 1700 S. Redwood Road, honked her horn to let the person in front of her know that the light had turned green, according to Salt Lake police. She then passed the vehicle.
While she was passing, she heard a loud "pop," according to a police report. When she pulled over, she found what appeared to be a bullet hole in her car. The woman reported the incident to officers.
Salt Lake police officers spotted a car matching the description of the suspect vehicle — a blue 2000 Honda Civic with no plates — several times around the city throughout the afternoon. Each time officers attempted to pull it over, however, the driver would flee. Police did not give chase.
About 8:15 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle again. The driver tried to speed away from the scene, but a train was crossing near 2500 West and 500 South and blocked his path, according to police. The fleeing vehicle tried to turn, but ended up crashing into a sign.
Four people got out and ran. Some received several cuts while trying to scale a fence and they later had to be treated by paramedics after being arrested.
Cheet Tes, 20, Gabriel Lopez, 19, Jorge Fuentes, 21, and Berry Ngen, 22, were arrested for investigation of various charges, including fleeing, reckless driving and failing to stop at the commands of an officer.
Investigators were still looking Thursday at whether the group could be connected to the earlier shooting.
