SALT LAKE CITY — The Wesley Bell Ringers of Christ United Methodist Church have performed for thousands of people along the Wasatch Front and throughout the country, and now the group is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The tradition of bell ringing dates back centuries to many parts of Europe, but the unique sound began 50 years ago in the Salt Lake Valley with the Wesley Bell Ringers. In 1963, nine young people volunteered to learn to play 25 hand bells under the direction of group's creator, Ed Duncan.

The group consists of 37 students ranging from freshmen in high school to freshmen in college. The students play a total of 250 bells.

"When you have as many bells, the finished product is big and it's loud and it's inspiring," said Wesley Bell Ringers director Terry Waite. "And when it's quiet, it's inspiringly quiet."

Along with making inspiring music, many of the teenagers made lasting friendships from being involved with the Wesley Bell Ringers.

"I felt really at home, really comfortable," said student Emma Laursen. "It really is like a second family."

The students said they have also noticed the impact that their music has on their audience.

"People who needed to cry but just couldn't get themselves to cry or just needed to smile and just couldn't, we helped bring them out," said Forrest Sawyer. "We help them find their emotions."

The 50th Anniversary Concert is on June 29 at Abravanel Hall. Attendance is free.
