SUNSET — A man was killed Monday after being hit by a FrontRunner train near 2400 North and 600 West, the Utah Transit Authority confirmed.
The man was hit about 6 p.m. by a northbound train, temporarily shutting down the UTA commuter-rail line in the area. Based on accounts from the train's conductor, the death is being investigated as a suicide, Sunset Police Chief Ken Eborn said.
The man appeared to intentionally lay down on the tracks as the train approached, leaving the conductor no time to stop, Eborn said. The man was in his 20s and is believed to be a Sunset resident.
There is not a crossing near the site where the man was struck, implying he went over or under a fence or walked north along the tracks from the nearest crossing in order to reach the area, Eborn said.
Police were attempting to contact the man's family Monday night. His name was not immediately released pending family notification.
UTA put a bus bridge in place to shuttle passengers between the Clearfield and Roy FrontRunner stations from about 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.
