DAY CANYON, Grand County — Crews found a man alive after he fell 200 feet from a rope swing Sunday evening, but he succombed to his injuries shortly after.
Sunday evening, a group was rappelling in Day Canyon, just west of Moab, when the accident occurred, the sheriff's office reported. A man and woman from the group were doing a tandem swing from one side of the canyon to the other.
During the transition from the swing to rappelling, the man removed his feet from the stirrups, then fell, Chief Deputy Darrel Mecham, Grand County Sheriff's Office said.
The woman was still clipped into the swing at the time and was stranded for some time on the swing.
Crews began their rescue efforts around 7:30 p.m. About 9 p.m., crews were able to reach the man, who was still alive, at the bottom of the canyon with a helicopter. Around 9:45 p.m., the man was declared dead from his injuries.
The woman's condition is also unknown, but she was rescued by members of her own party, Mecham said.
Mecham reminded the public to "be very careful" and take all necessary precautions in extreme sports.
