SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City is among three U.S. cities to get real-time public transit updates via Google Maps.

Google announced earlier this week it will add live updates from the Utah Transit Authority and the New York City subway system to Google Maps, along with service updates for Metrorail in Washington, D.C.

Google Maps already includes UTA schedules, but users will now be able to get updated departure and arrival times that account for variations in the schedule due to delays.

Salt Lake City was chosen to take part in the new project in part because UTA was willing to provide the company with a live feed of its master control system, which tracks buses, TRAX and FrontRunner trains.

To access the information, users can click on the public transit icons on any Google map of the area.

Google did not say in its blog post announcing the feature whether other locations across the country can expect real-time transit updates in the future.
