Teens poison teacher with hand sanitizer, police say

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A pair of Virginia teens face felony charges after trying to poison their teacher.

The charges come after a school staffer was tipped off by a student and an investigation ensued. According to police, the two 13-year-old boys had been poisoning a 68-year-old teacher for two to three months by putting hand sanitizer in her tea.

"The school reacted very quickly," Michelle Price, spokesperson for Newport News Public Schools the New York Daily News. The young men were identified - the school and police department began investigations. One of the young men actually confessed to putting the hand sanitizer into the teacher's beverage."

The woman complained of stomach pains to her doctor that are believed to be linked to the poisoning.

"The teacher indicated there were some medical concerns that were being treated by a doctor," said Lou Thurston of the Newport News Police.

The investigation, which began in January, has resulted in the two facing felony charges, long-term suspension, and reassignment to another school.

The teacher is reportedly back in school after taking a few days off for her ailment, but remains under a doctor's care.
