SALT LAKE CITY — A bill that would take away the ability of counties, cities and towns to ban fireworks received preliminary approval Wednesday in the Senate.
“This is our annual fireworks bill,” joked the bill's sponsor, Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem.
HB289 seeks to give municipalities the authority to prohibit the discharge of fireworks in specified areas, once local fire officials determine that hazardous environmental conditions exist. They wouldn't, however, be allowed to ban state-approved fireworks.
The bill, which previously passed in the House, received unanimous approval in its second reading in the Senate.
