SALT LAKE CITY — Girl Scouts throughout Utah can stretch their legs a little further thanks to the purchase of land near Camp Cloud Rim.

At the end of December, the Girl Scouts of Utah acquired 236 acres of land adjacent to Camp Cloud Rim, a Girl Scout Camp in Wasatch County between the Heber Valley and Park City.

Girl Scout officials said the purchase was necessary, as Park City's growth "threatened to compromise the experience and safety of the Girl Scout camp."

"I am very happy to announce the purchase of this property. We're protecting hundreds of acres of open space for generations to come and creating a buffer zone from competing interests," said Cathleen Sparrow, chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of Utah.

In a press release, the Girl Scouts of Utah said that the land purchase will help to preserve the land, including lakes and wildlife habitat. In addition to the purchase, they negotiated a permanent conservation easement to protect wildlife and environment by prohibiting commercial development.

Camp Cloud Rim is one of the Girl Scouts' two camp property in Utah and has been in operation for 75 years.

"The addition of the Silver Islet Lake parcel will greatly enhance a continued legacy to include expanded activities, recreation and educational programs," said Debbie Nielson, Girl Scouts of Utah Board Chair.
