SOUTH JORDAN — Friends, family and communities members gathered Saturday morning for a 5k memorial run in honor of Randy Treglown, the coach and teacher that was hit by a car and killed while jogging to work.
Treglown worked at Elk Ridge Middle School for 17 years as a teacher and coach. Co-workers say that he influenced countless youth and encouraged them to live a healthy lifestyle by example.
Treglown was very active so the 5k event was fitting in helping raise money for the Treglown Memorial Fund. The event finished the run with a final lap around the school track to commemorate Treglown's commitment to fitness.
"He was always smiling and happy," said Corbin Midgely, former student and creator of the event. "He was a mentor and really wanted to share his message of living a healthy lifestyle with his students. You can tell he really cared about his students because instead of just timing the students, he would run with us."
Around 210 runners faced the cold to support the fundraiser and memorial event, including Treglown's wife and three children. The participants were given a high visibility reflective vest to promote runner awareness. Police feel that if Treglown had been wearing reflective gear, it would have allowed the motorist to see him in the crosswalk when he was hit.
Awards were also presented to the 5k winners, that were donated by local businesses. Healthy South Jordan and Tri-Utah also donated equipment for the race and helped to organize the event.
