Payson businesses pitch in to promote literacy

PAYSON - The statewide movement to get businesses involved with schools has a new role model.

Payson city leaders are recruiting Main Street and beyond to help their schools and get kids reading.

Payson Mayor Rick Moore attended Park View Elementary, as did his children, and now his grandchildren - which helps explain why he and the city manager have gone door to door through town, recruiting business support for reading.

"With everywhere working together, that will help everybody read more," said Moore.

Everyone from business leaders to Miss Payson have committed to providing funds, incentives or volunteer time to boost literacy.

"Having a school right here next to all our businesses and being part of it is awesome," said Zach Voorhees of Poor Boys BBQ and Dawgs.

Rhett Huff with Mountain Air Assisted Living is personally invested in the program -- his son will directly benefit.

"I have a second grader here and he was so excited about all this," said Huff.

At nearby Wilson Elementary, the same support. School leaders say they can't do it alone. They're bolstered by the response from business leaders.

"With their support, we've been able to see just a big difference and it's exciting," said principal Daryl Fluckiger,
