SALT LAKE CITY — Police in Texas arrested one of Salt Lake City Police Department's most wanted fugitives earlier last month, police report.
Ricardo Herrera Gutierrez was federally charged with three counts of robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm during a violent crime in July 2011. Police accuse Gutierrez and a co-defendant, Jesus Miguel Rivera-Vega, of robbing Gonzales Market on 1220 S. Redwood Road on July 15, 2011.
Rivera-Vega pleaded guilty in January to one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. He told the court that he and Gutierrez robbed the market and then fled. He was sentenced to seven years in federal prison.
According to Salt Lake City Police, Gutierrez escaped and was recently found living in El Paso, Texas. Police in Salt Lake coordinated with Texas FBI and task forces to arrest Gutierrez at a business in El Paso following an FBI SWAT operation on Nov. 15.
U.S. Marshals will transport him to Salt Lake City, where he is expected to make an appearance in court for the complaint.
Police report that each count of robbery carries a maximum 20-year sentence and the firearms charge carries a mandatory minimum seven-year sentence that will run consecutively with other sentences.
