SALT LAKE CITY — The city government is looking for ways to get people to head downtown and enjoy their time there. It also is looking to find quicker ways to get residents in touch with city services, and its newest method is through a smartphone app.

The new app is simply called Salt Lake City Mobile and is available for both Apple and Android smartphones.

"We hope it will make it easier for people to find parking spaces or bike routes, use alternative fueling stations," said Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker.

The app gives people quick mobile access to a lot of information about the city as well as services. People can check job openings for the City, look up meeting schedules and more. Becker said the app will even let city residents use their phone to pay water bills and parking tickets in the near future.

The app also uses a person's location to help them get around the city by bus or even by renting a U-Haul Car Share vehicle.

"(You can) find the nearest bus stop, as well as track the bus on the route that you follow," says Bill Haight, manager of the city's information services.

It also shows people where all the off-street parking is and how much it will cost to park there, Haight said.
