SALT LAKE CITY — Community leaders and a local company are working to mobilize Utah residents to get to the polls and vote with free taxi rides.
The project comes from Latino leaders who work with the Hispanic population at Centro Civico. In 2008, they say there were successful in mobilizing about 200 citizens from the Latino community to vote using just a couple dozen volunteers.
While they're specifically targeting the Latino community, they want make it clear that the service is available to anyone who doesn't have reliable transportation.
This year, they recruited two Utah taxi companies with 24 vehicles between them. And while they're specifically targeting the Latino community, they want make it clear that the service is available to anyone who doesn't have reliable transportation.
Raul Ramirez, of Utah Eagle Taxi, will be voting this year. He says the community has been good to him, so he's happy to return the favor.
This year, Salt Lake County is required by law to have voting information in Spanish at the polls, so leaders feel that's one part of their mission to make voting accessible for Hispanics already accomplished.
