SALT LAKE CITY — Countless hours and volunteers have taken a drab underpass in Salt Lake City and turned it into art.
NeighborWorks Salt Lake on Wednesday celebrated the completion of the art project five years in the making. The Bridge Over Barriers project consists of 16 mosaic tile-covered pillars and more than 22,000 square feet of stained concrete murals. It's located on the I-15 overpass at 300 North (675 West).
Students who walk by it every day volunteered their time to make it happen.
"It is about the kids," said Jimmy Lucero, NeighborWorks art coordinator. "They are our future. We want to give them a sense of pride for their neighborhood, also a sense of self-worth."
A mural of Father Time was the last to be completed. The occasion was marked by a community celebration and ribbon-cutting.
