SALT LAKE CITY — Intermountain Healthcare has developed an iPad application that is hoped to increase patient safety and improve workflow on Life Flight.

The company was listed fourth out of 23 hospitals and health care providers on InformationWeek's list of the nation's 500 most innovative users of technology. It was named 47th overall.

The annual InformationWeek list recognizes businesses that are innovative users of technology. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Mass., took the top 2012 spot.

Life Flight crews had to take down patient information on paper prior to the development of the iPad app, leaving more room for human error and slowing the workflow. Frederick Holston, Intermountain's chief technology officer, said the app will ensure the seamless transfer of care between Life Flight and hospital teams.

"This is a good example of our continual efforts to develop and implement health IT solutions that improve patient care," he said.

Intermountain has been singled out in the past for its health care systems. Pres. Barack Obama in 2009 spotlighted the company for adopting practices that have improved efficiency and cut costs. And The New York Times Magazine in 2011 profiled the company as the frontrunner in efficient, cost-cutting practices.
