SALT LAKE CITY — A growing number of students at the University of Utah want to live on campus. The waiting list for housing is about 500 names long. The new honors student housing should help with that.
Dedicated Friday, the Donna Garff Marriott Honors Residential Scholars Community provides apartment-style living to 309 honors students. Named after a former honors student and its major benefactor, the complex has amenities from a market to dryers that text residents when their laundry is done.
The modern and energy efficient building is also about supporting a community of students with similar goals.
"It has these rooms where kids can get together and talk and share what they're studying, and exchange ideas," said donor J.W. Marriot. "And I think you learn a lot from each other."
"When I was in the honors program we had nothing like this," benefactor Donna Garff Marriott said. "We didn't even get together to discuss what we were doing or exchange ideas."
With on-site classrooms and a 24-hour market, these students say there's a lot to love about their new home.
"I love the bike storage room," said honors student Anna Hardesty. "I don't have to keep it in my room and there's tools to fix it and inflate tires. But the ski wax room is really neat too."
