COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A moose was on the loose Friday in Cottonwood Heights, giving neighbors a show and nearly getting close enough for some to touch.

A call was made to the Cottonwood Heights Police Department at 10:37 a.m. that a moose was walking toward a person on Scottish Drive in Cottonwood Heights. The moose turned down another street and ended up in Germania Circle.

The Department of Wildlife Resources was called to tranquilize the animal, which was standing near a ravine when officers caught up to the animal at about 1:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Scott Peck with the Cottonwood Heights Police Department.

The moose appeared to DWR officers to be uninjured, according to Peck.

Officers decided to give the moose the antidote to the dart and allow it to find its own way out of the ravine to avoid harming the animal. They are now waiting to see if the moose will return to the neighborhood.

Homeowners in the neighborhood were more excited than anything, according to Peck.

"They were all excited taking photos and video in their backyards, he said. "They were more curious and interested than worried."

If homeowners do encounter a moose, though, t is important to give the animal space and call authorities.

"They seem so loveable, but they're not nice animals," he said. "And of course, if you look outside and there's a gigantic wild animal in your yard, it's probably a good idea to call (the cops)."
