SALT LAKE CITY — The state is rolling out a new website that lets people renew their concealed carry permit in less than 10 minutes, but violence prevention advocates worry it makes the process too easy.
"The most convenient way to renew your Concealed Firearm Permit is online," said Commissioner Lance Davenport. "Instead of waiting several weeks, we have now streamlined the process so you can receive your permit sooner while applying online."
Gary Sackett with the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah said the website is concerning because the system which he says uses databases that are not very robust or reliable to check the background of people looking to carry a weapon.
He said public safety should trump "minor budgetary considerations."
"This does highlight the problem of how easy it is to obtain, in the first instance, concealed weapons firearm permit in this state," Sackett said. "Then the state turns around and makes it even easier to hold it."
