LOGAN — A former firefighter and a Nibley man are accused of ripping off the U.S. Forest Service and distributing drugs. Both men are in custody, and one had to be tracked down in Oregon.
According to the Logan Herald Journal, a trailer was stolen from the Forest Service Aug. 20. Michael Keller, 31, now a resident of Eugene, Orgegon, would have known the code to get through the gate at the Forest Service complex because Keller worked as a firefighter for the service.
Surveillance video shows that two men took a trailer, a snowmobile, winter rescue gear and firefighting equipment. Police traced the vehicle seen in the video to Keller.
He wasn't alone in this theft. Police say they found the stolen trailer at the Nibley home of Thomas MacElwee. He was booked on suspicion of distributing drugs including marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms, methamphetamine and cocaine, as well as possession of all of the above, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of stolen property, possession of a firearm by a restricted person and alteration of a VIN number.
Apparently he or somebody else had stripped away most of the identifying markings on the trailer.
