SALT LAKE CITY — A program that gives free child care to University of Utah students while they work out is becoming so popular, keeping up with demand is proving to be pretty tough.

The Team Tots program lets parents drop off their children, ages 2-6, at the Associated Students of the University of Utah child care facility, go work out for a couple of hours, then pick up their child when they're finished.

Recreation Services Marketing Coordinator Julian Gomez says it's one less thing to parents have to worry about.

"We like them to use our facilities because it's one less burden on them to not have to pay for an external membership at Gold's [Gym]," he said.

Gomez says the number of people using the program has grown between 20 and 30 percent each year for the past three years. He says the ASUU Child Care facility can't have too many parents come to the center.

"The ASUU folks tell us, generally, there is a waiting list every week for it," he said.

But that doesn't mean there are not any open spots. Gomez says spots are rotated every week.

"A parent can't call in at the beginning of the semester and say, ‘I'm going to work out every Tuesday and Thursday. Can you put me down for the whole semester?' They actually have to call in, each week, in order to get on that list," he explained.

The program is offered only on Tuesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. But Gomez says they may look into adding one more day of the service per week, if the facilities get more staffing.
