PLAIN CITY, Weber County — A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after he and an adult relative were struck by lighting in Plain City Saturday afternoon.

Dispatchers say a 25-year-old man and the 13-year-old boy were out hunting near 3500 West and 4000 North in Rail Trail trailhead when the lighting hit.

A wildlife officer was on duty just off the trailhead when he saw the two hunters come running into the parking lot.

"Two people were literally running toward the parking lot trying to get out of the rain," said Sgt. Mitch Lane. "There was a big flash and a big boom and those two individuals went straight to the ground."

Lane called 911 and began trying to revive the 13-year-old.

"The younger of two victims was not getting up," Lane said. "He was just lying there."

An ambulance reported to the emergency call because the weather was too severe for a helicopter. They transported the boy to McKay Dee Hospital, and from there he was airlifted to Primary Children's Hospital.

The 13-year old was reportedly in critical condition and the 25-year old was initially reported to be in good condition.

The strike happened during a thunderstorm that swept through Plain City Saturday afternoon. A severe thunderstorm watch was in place in the area most of the day and the severe thunderstorm that hit Tooele County around 3 p.m. was slowly moving in the direction of Weber county.

The names of the two hunters have not yet been released.
