LOGAN — Students at Utah State University have won a NASA rocketry challenge for the fourth time in five years.
The rocket launch took place April 22 at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center outside of Huntsville, Ala. Utah State beat 40 other universities to take home a $5,000 prize.
The competition required students to design and build a working rocket capable of reaching an altitude of one mile and returning safely back to earth. Teams also were required to maintain a project website and engage in educational outreach campaigns.
The requirement helped teams to apply the knowledge they are gaining in their respective degree programs, according to Tammy Rowan, an event organizer.
"They're managing complex science and technology research and conducting aerospace and engineering projects from drawing board to launch pad," she said. "These teams are performing exceptional engineering, rocket science and theoretical research."
USU also took home the Best Vehicle Design award for its creativity, innovation and safety consciousness.
