More I-15 interchange closures in Orem

OREM — For commuters who regularly use I-15, new closures are headed your way. On Monday April 23, UDOT will close half of the intersection at 1600 North in Orem for 30 days, including the northbound on-ramp to I-15 and south-bound off ramp from I-15.

This will be the first of several long-term closures planned for this summer as UDOT reconstructs the interchanges along I-15 in Orem. Once the work on the first half of the 1600 North interchange is done, construction crews will move to 800 North, closing the entire interchange for 42 days.

From there, they'll move to Center Street and close that entire interchange for 30 days.

Once Center Street is done, the crews will then move back to 1600 North to finish phase two of the reconstruction. That phase will last about 15 days, but during that time the entire interchange will close.

This year we're really going to be looking at interchanges closely, so just be aware you will have impacts," said I-15 CORE Project Director Todd Jensen. "But again our strategy is not to have all of them closed at the same time. It will be one at a time." Jensen said all of the interchanges should be complete by August, and I-15 should be complete by December. He said those needing access to Orem during the closures will still be able to use University Parkway, where construction will be completed by May.

"We've been looking really closely at these interchanges realizing the impact it has with the traveling public, (and) working with the contractor in more efficient ways to deal with this," Jensen said.

The interchange closures were originally scheduled to last 60 days but UDOT and the contractor, Provo River Construction, worked together to minimize the impact to motorists the best they could.
