PROVO, Utah (AP)-- A woman accused of kidnapping her daughter to stop her wedding has a history of meddling in other nuptials, a prosecutor alleges.
Utah County prosecutor Curtis Larson wants to raise it during Julia Redd's trial. Her defense attorney, however, said the allegations are irrelevant.
"I think it's nothing more than an attempt at assassinating the character of a client in an attempt to taint the jury pool," Rhome Zabriskie said. "The allegations are baseless as far as it relates to the charge of kidnapping."
Redd, 57, and husband Lemuel Redd, 60, are accused of kidnapping daughter Julianna Myers on the eve of her wedding. A brief trip to buy religious garments for the ceremony in a Mormon temple turned into a long drive to Colorado and a night in a motel in August 2006.
In court documents, Larson alleges Julia Redd spoiled another daughter's wedding in 1999 when she visited the fiance at work and called him the "son of a devil," the Deseret Morning News reported Monday. He dropped out of the wedding.
In 1975, Julia Redd tried to create doubts and fears in a sister's fiance, and, three years earlier, interfered in a brother's relationship, according to documents filed in 4th District Court.
Zabriskie said he would ask a judge to keep the allegations out of the Dec. 3 trial.
Julianna and Perry Myers were married Aug. 8, 2006, three days later than planned, at the Salt Lake City temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her parents, who live in Monticello in southern Utah, did not attend.
There were attempts last spring to settle the kidnapping case against the Redds with a plea agreement, but they failed.
