TAYLORSVILLE -- Hundreds of students and adults from Taylorsville attempted to break a world record Friday afternoon, all in the name of charity and good fun.

Participants gathered at Eisenhower Junior High School to set a new record for the world's largest marshmallow fight, throwing or tossing approximately 2,000 pounds of 140,000 marshmallows in nearly 15 minutes. The event asked all participants to donate $2.00 to cover the cost of marshmallows and to donate to the Utah Food Bank and the American Red Cross.

All participants were asked to wear protective eyewear and to remove their shoes prior to the event, before being separated by a "no-man's-land" of 20 feet on the school's field, per record-setting rules.

The previous record was set on July 5, 2011, when hundreds of people threw over 600 pounds of marshmallows at the annual Ocean Beach Marshmallow Fight in Ocean Beach, California.

Following Friday's event, the school submitted the record attempt to The Book of Alternative Records in Germany, the Guinness World Records in England, Record Setter World Records in New York and Ripley's Believe It or Not in Florida.
