VERNAL— Motorists heading east on Highway 40 into Vernal noticed smoke billowing over the hill.
What appeared at first to be a wildfire turned out to be a pile of debris from several abandoned mobile homes that had been bulldozed. Firefighters worked to control the blaze in a field of weeds behind Walmart that was fanned by an intermittent breeze.
A firefighter standing outside the fenced area gave the order to let it burn, and firefighters then focused on containment. The fire was still burning as of 8 p.m. Wednesday.
