SALT LAKE CITY -- With the new season under way and the Utes already winning their first game against the Montana State Bobcats, we take a closer look at each position and their overall production.
Quarterback: C
Jordan Wynn played a careful game, not really showing anything too impressive. There needs to be more production and leadership from Wynn to help the offense get in a rhythm and connect better.
Running Backs/Full Backs: A
John White was the best player on the offense, showing that he's the man for the running back position. Montana state could barely contain his run game.
Wide Receiver/Tight End: B
Although there wasn't much action in this position, the passing game appeared to be functional and well. Following DeVonte Christopher's first-quarter touch down, the passing game was quiet.
Offensive Line: B+
The offensive line did a pretty good job containing the defense and providing Wynn with time. Additionally, the offensive line did well at giving White gaps to run through. However, there were times when confusion led to some easy sacks for Montana State.
Overall Offense: B
The offense moved sluggishly and needed more energy to keep the game and momentum going. The first half of the game was certainly better than the second, where the offense seemed to shutdown. Overall, there needs to be more urgency on the offense.
Defensive Line: A-
The defensive line played great football, especially in the first half. There was little the Bobcats could do to get down the field.
Linebackers: A-
Linebackers were key to stopping the Bobcats' offense in the first half. With Brian Blechen's interception and great coverage, Montana State had little options available to them.
Defensive Backs: A-
Overall, the coverage was good. There was some miscommunication that led to the Bobcats' only touchdown, but everything appears to be in order, so far.
Overall Defense: A-
The defense played great in the opening game of the year. There are some improvements to be made, but they are few. If the Utes defense can continue with it's intensity, it is likely they will be a force in the Pac-12.
Special Teams: A
There was little to be concerned about with special teams. Coleman Petersen showed he is the Utes starting kicker, with deep on-target field goals.
Overall Team: B-
Against an FCS team like Montana State, the Utes should have been able to have their way with them. The defense is about where it should be, but must continue to increase in intensity to compete against Pac-12 teams. The offense is the weak spot for the Utes. There needs to be more intensity and production for the offense as they make their first step against a Pac-12 team -- USC.
