OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- Families of veterans are asking where their money has gone a week after a nonprofit group canceled plans to fly them to Washington, D.C.
The group, Our Unsung Heroes, canceled the planned trip to take the veterans and their families to see the World War II memorial. The group says it had to be canceled after issues came up with the airline contracted to fly the trip.
The group said trips for the veterans would be paid for, but family and friends accompanying them had to pay $900 each to go.
Committee members of the organization estimate between 85 to 95 people paid to go on the trip called "Hero Flight."
Judy Lemmons, a "Hero Flight" committee member, says a former director of the nonprofit used that money to pay an outstanding debt on the last flight that took place in November.
A representative of the Utah Department of Commerce's Division of Consumer Protection says it is conducting an audit of the organization.
Lemmons says she has formed a new group called Operation Hero Flight and hopes to make good on the promise to take veterans to see the memorial erected in their honor.
