SALT LAKE CITY — One man is recovering from a gunshot wound and another is in jail following an altercation between the men that began when one decided to take a rest in the other's bed.

Police say a man was visiting his friend, James Lawrence Russell, at Russell's home at 12016 S. Sage Ridge Circle, Sandy, on Nov. 25 when Russell became angry at for him lying in his bed.

The two men then started fighting, and Russell asked the man to leave, according to charges filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court.

Russell then pointed a gun at the man and said, "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't shoot you in the foot or shin," according to charging documents.

After the man left, Russell followed him out the door and down the sidewalk. Russell then pointed a gun at the man and said, "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't shoot you in the foot or shin," according to charging documents.

The man said he tried to calm Russell down for several minutes and told him he had called police, the charges state. Russell then shot the man in the leg and ran back into the house, according to the charges.

Sandy police arrived at the home and found the man on the ground with a gunshot wound to his shin. The man was taken to an area hospital, where it was determined his fibula and tibia had been shattered. Russell was arrested at his home.

Russell has been charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony. He's being held in Salt Lake County Jail on $50,000 bail.
