SALT LAKE CITY - Utah freshman safety Brian Blechen has been named to the Sporting News All-Freshman Team, the publication announced today.

It is the fourth Freshman All-America citation for Blechen, who was a second-team pick by Rivals.com and Phil Steele, and honorable mention by CollegeFootballNews.com. Blechen's latest honor brings Utah's All-America total to 14. Punt returner Shaky Smithson has been named to six All-America teams, while offensive lineman Caleb Schlauderaff and Blechen have made four, apiece.

Blechen, an honorable mention all-conference pick, finished second in the MWC in interceptions with four and was a three-time MWC Defensive Player of the Week. He made game-saving interceptions vs. Pitt in overtime and San Diego State. He is tied for third on the team in tackles with 61.
