SPANISH FORK — Lexus Latham hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th inning giving San Juan a 6-5 victory over Enterprise in the 2A Softball championship.
It is San Juan's third title in six years.
"I had been struggling all day and I knew it was my time," said Latham about her game winning single. "This is my senior year and it was going to be my last at-bat so I knew I just had to get up there and hit it really hard."
It looked like Enterprise was going to force a second game after they took a 5-1 lead in the top of the 4th inning. Everything changed with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Senior Brooke Lyman hit a grand slam over the left field fence tying the game. It was her 10th grand slam of the season and the team's 45th home run of the year which is a state record.
"That's one that she'll remember," said head coach Craig Swenson. "I'll remember it too."
The grand slam set the stage for a thrilling end.
With starting pitcher Tatiana Su'e Su'e on second base, Latham hit a pitch up the center of the field allowing Su'e Su'e to score the game-winning run.
"It feels so good," Su'e Su'e said. "Finally state champs!".
