KSL Coaches Poll: Matchups intensify as region games get underway

SALT LAKE CITY — There wasn't a lot of movement in this week's KSL Coaches Poll but that is sure to change next week.

Top five games to watch this week
No. 2 Weber at No. 3 Davis Tues. 7pm
Not only is this a battle of two of the top five teams in 5A but its also a very important region battle. No. 4 Bountiful at No. 5 East Tues. 7pm
Another battle between ranked teams and region foes. The winner gets a leg up in the region 6 title race.No. 1 Orem at No. 3 Timpview Tues. 7pm
The Thunderbirds get their shot at the defending champions.No. 1 Lone Peak vs. American Fork, Thursday 7 p.m. (at Utah Valley University)
This game has become so big they had to move it to UVU just to accommodate all the fans.No. 1 Bingham at No. 2 Riverton (Girls) Thursday 7:15 pm
The top two girls basketball teams in the state put their undefeated records on the line in this rivalry matchup.
Top five performances of the Week
Parker Van Dyke, East
The Leopards trailed Herriman by 22 points to start the 4th quarter when Van Dyke led a remarkable rally. He scored 36 points including the game-winning free throw in a 69-68 win. Jake Miles, Morgan
Miles scored 38 points and was a perfect 15-15 from the free throw line leading the Trojans to big region win on the road over Bear River. He scored 27 points Friday night.Brekkott Chapman, Roy
Chapman scored a game high 28 points leading the Royals to an important region win over Box Elder. He scored 29 in a win over Skyline on Tuesday.Race Parsons, South Sevier
Parsons scored 31 points and made seven 3-point shots in a win over Grand on Friday and then scored 29 points the next day against San Juan.Alex Gishie, Navajo Mountain
Gishie put up some crazy numbers in a loss to Whitehorse. He had 41 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals and made eight 3-point shots for the Jaguars.

There are several games this week featuring match ups between ranked teams.

In 5A there are two on Tuesday. 2nd ranked Weber and 3rd ranked Davis will play each other on Tuesday as will No. 1 Lone Peak and No. 5 Pleasant Grove. No. 4 Brighton will play at Jordan. The Beetdiggers were ranked 5th last week and are the top vote getter among others receiving votes in the 5A poll.

4A also features some intriguing matchups. Orem puts their No. 1 ranking on the line when they travel across town to face No. 3 Timpview in an important Region 8 matchup. Also on Tuesday No. 4 Bountiful will travel to East to face the 5th ranked Leopards. That game will have an impact on the Region 6 race. No. 2 Sky View will also be tested against Cache Valley rival Logan.

Judge is still No. 1 in 3A. The Bulldogs play an important region game Tuesday at 5pm against rival Juan Diego. No. 2 Morgan passed an important test last Wednesday when the won on the road against Bear River. No. 3 Cedar needed a tip in with 2 seconds left to beat Snow Canyon and remain perfect in region 9 play. No. 4 Desert Hills will host a very good Snow Canyon team on Wednesday. No. 5 Spanish Fork is off to a 2-0 start in Region 12 as their battle with Payson approaches next Tuesday.

Wasatch Academy is still No. 1 in 2A. They host an important region game with Manti on Wednesday. They are followed by No. 2 South Sevier who will travel to take on Richfield in a rivalry game on Friday. Emery moves up to No.3 in the poll followed by Gunnison and Beaver.

Panguitch is the new No. 1 in 1A after their 54-46 win over previous No. 1 ranked Bryce Valley who drops to No. 3 in the 1A poll. Duchesne is No. 2 while Layton Christian is ranked 4th and Monticello 5th.
