LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) -- A lesson to opposing teams: It's best not to make Brandon Ewing mad.
Ewing, who made just two free throws in the first half, finished with 28 points in Wyoming's 86-78 victory over Utah on Wednesday.
Utah had tied the score at 62 with 7:28 left on a 3-pointer by Ricky Johns, but Wyoming got ahead with a six-point run and kept out of reach until the end.
Ewing said his emotions changed when he was pushed to the ground after getting a rebound in the second half.
"I fell and hit both of my elbows and my head on the ground," he said. "That kind of got me mad. My teammates know that when I get mad anything can happen out there."
Wyoming coach Steve McClain said Ewing's teammates took advantage of his hot hand.
"When he got hot the other guys did a great job of finding him," McClain said. "This is the second game in a row that we have had 17 assists. One that means you are sharing the ball, and two that means you are shooting it pretty well."
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field: The Utes (9-17, 4-9) made 57.1 percent and the Cowboys shot 56 percent.
Utah coach Ray Giacoletti said the Utes struggled with 17 turnovers, and struggled against Wyoming's shooting.
"You aren't going to beat many teams when they shoot 56 percent for the game," he said.
After Ewing, Brad Jones scored 19 points and James Spencer 16 for the Cowboys (15-12, 6-7 Mountain West Conference).
Johnnie Bryant led Utah with 26 points, followed by Lawrence Borha with 13, Daniel Deane with 12 and Shaun Green with 11.
The Utes were without leading scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker Luke Nevill, who injured his hip Monday. Nevill has been averaging 17 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
