GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — East Carolina has signed junior college quarterback Gardner Minshew.

The school announced Minshew's signing Wednesday, about a week after losing Kurt Benkert to a transfer. Benkert won the starting job during preseason camp in 2015 before being lost for the year to a knee injury, but was expected to compete for the top job this fall for first-year coach Scottie Montgomery before his surprise departure.

Minshew spent a year at Northwest Mississippi Community College and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

The Pirates open the season Sept. 3 against Western Carolina.
