PROVO — To NFL coaches and executives,

I am writing to petition you to seriously consider drafting BYU wide receiver Cody Hoffman in the upcoming NFL draft. During his four-year career at BYU, Hoffman had 260 receptions for 3,612 yards and 33 touchdowns — all records at the school that popularized the forward pass. Perhaps even more impressive than the gaudy stats is that he put them up despite having four different quarterbacks, two different offensive coordinators and playing in three offensive schemes. It is almost frightening to think what the man could have done with any measure of consistency surrounding him.

As soon as you look at Hoffman’s highlight reels, you will immediately see that the main reason this young man was able to produce such outstanding results is that he catches everything thrown his way. Much of the turnover at quarterback during his tenure in Provo was because of lackluster play from the signal caller. As such, Hoffman routinely had to make unbelievable catches on poorly thrown balls. His knack for catching errant throws makes him a quarterback’s dream and will be a tremendous asset to your team; especially if you are trying to break in a new passer and give him confidence.

Another reason Hoffman was so productive is that he can run all the routes. He’s unafraid of going over the middle, he runs outs, he runs slants, he runs screens; he does it all. What potentially makes him most attractive as a professional player, though, is his ability in the red zone. With his size (6-foot-4, 210 pounds), Hoffman is a nightmare for corners near the goal line. On fade routes into the end zone, corners had no chance when the ball was thrown high as Hoffman has terrific body control and the mentality that any ball thrown in the general vicinity of him is his. This attitude was largely responsible for his impressive 33 career touchdown receptions.

You want toughness? How about a kid who caught 161 balls total in 2011 and 2012 while playing with a seriously injured shoulder. If that wasn't enough, he put up another fantastic season in 2013 despite hamstring issues. You want character? How about a kid who didn’t complain one time in four years about anything despite the merry-go-round of quarterbacks and coaches that typified his career as a Cougar. In the very rare instances when correction was necessary, Hoffman showed how coachable he is when he took full responsibility for his actions and did what was asked of him. You want loyalty? How about a kid who returned to school for his senior year despite knowing that he would have to play in a whole new system with an unpolished quarterback throwing passes his way.

In conclusion, if you want a guy who will put up big numbers, stay out of trouble and be a good role model for his teammates and fans, I strongly suggest that you look into drafting Cody Hoffman. If not, you’re probably the Oakland Raiders.
