RENO, Nev. (AP) — Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams has agreed to be the featured speaker at an annual fundraiser for the University of Nevada baseball team in January.

Williams is a Carson City native who starred at Carson High and later at UNLV. He was a five-time all-star in the major leagues, hitting .268 with 378 home runs in a total of 17 seasons with the Diamondbacks, Indians and Giants.

Williams was the third base coach on Kirk Gibson's Arizona coaching staff for four seasons before joining the Nationals this year. He led them to the playoffs with the best record in the National League before losing to San Francisco.

The 31st annual Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner is set for Jan. 16 at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino in downtown Reno.
