DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A fire that broke out in Dubai has sent thick black smoke over the famous Palm Jumeirah, a man-made island in the United Arab Emirates.

The fire Tuesday struck a building under construction at the base of the palm-shaped island. Civil defense officials fought the blaze and sent a helicopter flying overhead.

The Dubai Media Office later said firefighters extinguished the blaze within 30 minutes and that there were no injuries.

Fires have struck several skyscrapers and other buildings in the Emirates this year, including a February blaze that broke out at Dubai's 86-story Torch tower, one of the world's tallest residential towers.

A fire struck a 32-story building last week, as well as a building in Dubai's Deira neighborhood, forcing authorities to shut down part of the city's metro.
