CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Federal prosecutors in Wyoming have agreed to pay $25,000 to settle a Colorado man's claim to more than $250,000 cash that law enforcement seized after investigating an unregistered airplane that landed at the Cody airport in early 2014.
U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson last week approved a settlement between the federal government and Scott Michael Lewis of Englewood, Colorado. It calls for Lewis to give up his claim to the remaining $234,000 in exchange for the $25,000 payment.
Lewis and another man pleaded guilty in April to felony charges of operating an unregistered airplane and gave up any claim to the airplane. Police have said a drug dog alerted to the airplane but no drugs were found.
Lewis' lawyer has said Lewis had the cash from unspecified legitimate activities.
