DOVER, Del. (AP) — Dover police have launched a program called ANGEL that allows addicts to hand over their drugs and get the medical and emotional help they need from volunteers.
Media outlets report that Dover police partnered with the Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative to enact the "open door" policy on Thursday.
Police Chief Paul Bernat says anybody can come to the police station and tell police that they're an addict. Instead of arresting them, police will put their drugs into evidence and then make sure the person gets treatment.
Officials hope the program will reduce the number of overdoses in the state, and will help curb the growing problem of opioid addiction.
