BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards has been elected chair of the Southern Regional Education Board.

The Office of the Governor of Louisiana says in a news release that Gov. Edwards was elected chair Sunday at the organization's annual meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas. Board chairs are elected to one-year terms.

As chair, Edwards will lead the collaborative work of governors, legislators and state education leaders to improve public education from early childhood through doctoral education.

Edwards says he is looking forward to elevating the dialogue in Louisiana and other states about the importance of strengthening education.

Edwards succeeds Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas. He will also serve as chair of the Southern Regional Education Board's Commission on Teacher Preparedness.
